The TMJBDS system by Myoresearch (MRC)

This is a system that combines a series of economical appliances with breathing and muscle strengthening exercises for the face. These are applied in order to correct the underlying causes of sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD), including sleep apnoea and snoring, and temporomandibular disorder (TMD). In simple terms, the latter refers to disorders of the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. TMD causes jaw clenching and teeth grinding, particularly at night. This can lead to headaches, jaw pain, neck and shoulder tension and sometimes, broken teeth.

Root causes

Sleep-related breathing disorders are often caused by a combination of factors, including:

  • Anatomical issues like enlarged tonsils

  • A narrow airway, or a deviated septum.

  • Obesity can also play a significant role, as excess fat around the neck and throat increases airway obstruction.

  • Nasal congestion

  • Weakened muscles in the throat.

  • Lifestyle factors, such as alcohol consumption, smoking, and certain medications, can exacerbate these problems by relaxing the muscles in the throat or increasing inflammation.

  • Trauma to the temporomandibular joint (jaw)T

hese underlying causes interfere with normal airflow during sleep, leading to breathing disruptions.

Importance of treatment

Correcting the underlying problems causing sleep-related breathing disorders is crucial because these issues, such as obstructive sleep apnea, can lead to serious long-term health consequences, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Addressing the root causes helps improve overall health by enhancing sleep quality, reducing daytime fatigue, boosting cognitive function, and lowering the risk of these chronic conditions. By effectively treating the cause rather than just alleviating symptoms, individuals can achieve more sustainable, long-term health improvements and better overall well-being.
